Accomplished

I love me a good to do list. This is for 2 reasons.

  1. It outlines my tasks and helps clear my head
  2. It feels so amazing to cross things off and see what you’re getting done

Yesterday was one of those days.

First of all, let me just say how nice it was to have the day AFTER Christmas off. That extra day really helped get things reset and back to normal before starting work again.

Boy did we take advantage! Originally we considered using the day to catch a movie or something but that would involve a baby-sitter (we feel Isabella is too young yet for movies, even the kids ones). Plus, that would take valuables hours away from the many tasks that have been piling up. Owning a house – and particularly having just moved – means no end to chores, fixes, repairs, remodels, etc. So we opted to stay home and get stuff done.

I didn’t actually write out a list, which is unusual for me, but I was checking one off in my head. Here’s everything I got done:

  • 2 loads of laundry folded and put away
  • First floor vacuumed
  • Dishes washed and put away (by hand and dishwasher)
  • Pictures hung in the master bedroom
  • 2 pictures hung in the living room
  • After Christmas shopping done at Lowe’s
  • Isabella’s kitchen set put together*
  • Christmas presents put away
  • Goodwill items donated*
  • Basement cleaned up and some organization started**

CJ got a whole bunch of other stuff done too, from his own list.

Boy did it feel good! I went to bed last night exhausted yet satisfied.

Switching gears a bit. I’m not going to write a whole Christmas re-cap post this year because frankly, I’m ready to move on. I love the holidays and we had an awesome weekend, but I’d rather leave it be and quietly go forth with my week. It’s one of those things that you build up for a whole month and then when it’s over, it’s time to just let it go and stop retelling it.

One thing I will share is that this year we got Isabella involved in culling through her toys. Before we even brought one gift from Grandma’s into the house or opened many of her Santa gifts, we had her sit with us in the play room and decide which toys she would keep, which ones would be put away for a while (i.e. take out of the rotation and bring back in 6 months from now when we needed something “new”) and which would be given away to “other kids and babies and ladies and guys” (as she says it).

I thought it would be hard for her to understand and that we’d have to grab toys out of her clutched little hands but it didn’t go that way at all. She was cool with giving some of them away. She even went with us to Goodwill yesterday and watched daddy take the bags of stuff in. She asked where daddy was taking her toys and I reminded her about other kids who needed them. She said, “And babies and ladies and guys.” Yes, them too.

With a herd of toys either gone or relegated to the basement, her playroom had much more room for her new toys, like the kitchen set. It looked so nice and neat and open last night I almost wept. I know it won’t last – especially with my tornado Father-in-law coming over today – but it sure looked good for a day!

Another project that was started today was the basement. That one wasn’t even on my to do list – it was a total accident. See, last week I started working out again. Some of my gear is still packed away, and we don’t have the TV set up in the basement yet, so I’ve been forced to do either the elliptical while reading a magazine or free weight moves (using fitness cards from magazines). Well I finished my magazine this morning before my time was up on the elliptical and I CANNOT use a machine without either reading material or TV to watch. So I had to find other cardio. I looked around the basement – which has basically been the dumping grounds for everything else in the house that we don’t know what to do with – and decided I might as well work on organizing it.

So I moved furniture (including the elliptical which before was tucked back in a dark corner and now is near another wall, under some light), went through boxes, picked up toys, and basically started figuring out where things should go and how to keep it somewhat tidy while still being in limbo.

I got so much done and was moving and using muscles the whole time. Not too exciting but I felt great about it! Plan to do that again tomorrow and every day thereafter until we have a gym membership (which could be sooner rather than later)!

I have a whole slew of other projects to get done but those will have to wait for another day and another post.

Blog-o-versary

My 1 year anniversary of having this blog came and went on October 7th. Oops. I meant to write up something really profound about how this blog has changed my life and how far I’ve come since my first post. But I didn’t have time. And to be honest, I forgot.

What can I say, I’ve been just a little busy. We moved. Isabella had her 2nd birthday. Work got crazy. And then there was the rest of life in between.

We’re getting settle in to the new house and it feels great. I’m not used to having so much room and sometimes I don’t know what to do with it. We have many shelves and cabinets sitting empty in the kitchen because I don’t know what to put in them. The front room feels ginormous, even with Isabella’s toys in it. Our bed room seems big and bare because we need more stuff to fill it. But, it’ll come. Slowly we will make each and every corner of this house our own. The family room and kitchen feel the most done. Here are a few pics:

new family room 2

We still need to put pics up on the walls, and a coffee table in the middle, but you get the idea. On the left side is the new double recliner leather couch we bought. Love! Would like to put bookshelves along that back wall, with the t.v. in the middle, but not sure when we’ll have the budget for that.

The fireplace is coming along. Right now I think this all feels too symmetrical so I have to play with it more. Also needs more height. But it’s a starting point. I love the old polaroid camera on the right side. I found it at a thrift store for $9. I put it there to reflect our love for photography. The pic in the middle is from Ireland, which was the trip on which CJ proposed, and the angel next to it was a gift from my parents when our last baby died. I also plan to put the urn up on the mantle with the baby’s ashes in it. The big clock hanging on the wall was a house warming gift from our real estate agents.

We had a fun weekend doing stuff besides working on the house. We went to Nebraska City and Isabella had so much fun playing with her cousins. This was the first time all of them really played together, since the cousins are so much older. It was neat to see.

Well, it’s time for me to head to bed. I need to get back on my workout schedule in the morning. No excuses!

Happy anniversary Team Trader Mom!

Home Sweet Home

My feet are sore. My back is achy. Our laundry is an ever growing pile in the corner of the room. This is our new home, and I love it.

The last 4 days have been a whirlwind. There’s so much to share that I’m not sure I can recount it all in true justice. I had planned to document each moment of the day in photos but that lasted as far as 2 pics and then the whirlwind took over. So here’s the nutshell.

Wednesday, 9/28/11:

  • Late afternoon: discover that the relocation company the sellers of our new house are using (NEI Global – evil!!) is causing issues, thereby preventing us from closing on our house the next morning as planned.
  • Evening and in to the night: packing and more packing

Thursday, 9/29

  • Wake up early, more packing.
  • Find out there is still no word on when we’ll close on the house.
  • We take Isabella and drop her off at Owen’s house. She’ll spend the day there, stay the night and spend the next day. She says good-bye to each room before we leave. This will be her last time ever seeing this house. Bittersweet.
  • Come home and spend the whole day packing and cleaning (rinse and repeat) with the help of my mom.
  • Stop for dinner then go to the new house where we sneak in to clean and lay plastic runners on the carpet.
  • Still no closing time.

Friday, 9/30

  • It’s Isabella’s birthday. We won’t see her until about 6pm. That makes me sad but I know it’s for a good reason.

full house

  • Mayflower movers come at 8:30 (half an hour late).

empty truck

  • Find out they won’t take many items so we scramble to start loading up my SUV. I end up making 3 trips out to the new house with stuff the movers won’t take. I had not planned on that. Get back to find out the truck is full and they are done with the house. However, they have no more room and were supposed to empty out our storage facility too. I’m pissed.
  • Movers break for lunch (neither CJ or I would eat anything until 6:30 that night). We frantically clean to try and get out and meet moves at the new house in an hour. CJ leaves while I finish. Movers take an extra long lunch.
  • Can’t fit all the cold/frozen food in our coolers so I decide to make 2 trips. As I’m heading out on trip #1 I get the call that the closing will be at 4pm. It’s now 2pm. I have to get my car load of stuff to the new house, empty it, get lunch, stop by the bank for a cashier’s check, go to the old house and finish getting the food, plus vacuum, stop and pick up my mom, take her to the new house, pick up CJ and get to the title office by 4pm. No problem!

samson yard

  • Of course I run in to construction, super long lines at the bank, a teller who is in training, and bratty kids standing in the middle of the street! I literally threw the food from the fridge in to the coolers and ran out to the car, dragging the vacuum with me, not bothering to use it. Got to our house at 3:50 and we made it to the title office at 3:58. Phew!
  • Closed on the house – it’s now ours!
  • Came home and tried to get Munchkin’s room ready before she arrived. Finished just in time. She was so happy to see us and be in the new house. She loved it! We ate dinner with our friends and then all crashed in to bed.

family new house

Saturday, 10/1

  • Unpacked, unpacked, unpacked.
  • Celebrated Isabella’s birthday with family

presents

cake

candle

mess

Sunday 10/2

  • Unpacked, unpacked, ran errands, stopped by storage, unpacked
  • Wrote this post
  • Will pay bills and get ready for work
  • Then crash

The move did not go as smoothly as hoped. The movers were late, couldn’t take many things, underestimated the size of truck that would be needed and couldn’t get our storage items, took a long lunch, lied to my mom about the time (she had to write the check b/c we were at closing when they finished) and kept (stole?) CJ’s 6 foot step ladder. You can be damn sure they will be getting a call from me tomorrow demanding they send a truck out to move our storage stuff for free. And to replace the ladder.

But aside from that, we got in and are slowly getting settled. We all love it here. Still getting used to having another level and all this extra space, which is a good problem to have.

Twas the night before closing…

…and all through the house, there were many projects to do, for me and my spouse.

That’s right. Tomorrow we close on both houses and then we move everything out of the old one on Friday.  It will be a whirlwind of papers and signatures and cleaning and packing and more. It’s bittersweet. While I’m SUPER excited to be in our new, bigger beautiful house, I’m also a bit sad to leave this one. I didn’t think I would be, given the old appliances, cramped hallways and never ending items to fix. But this is the place that CJ and I first called home. It was our first place that we got together. The one where we came to as husband and wife. The yard where we first chased Samson. The sanctuary where we brought home our new little baby. We’ve had a lot of great moments here and a lot of sad ones too. Though this was never meant to be our forever house, it will forever hold a place in our hearts.

Tonight is Isabella’s last here. Tomorrow morning she’s off to spend the next 2 days and 1 night with her boyfriend Owen (in separate cribs of course). Our dear friends have offered to take her so that CJ and I can focus on getting both houses in order. We’ve talked a lot about moving and she loves the new house. But of course she doesn’t fully understand it all. Tomorrow when she leaves, it’ll be for good.

So, tonight we walked to her favorite park down the block. We went there almost every night of the Spring and Summer. I thought she’d like to say good-bye.

We rode all her favorite rides. When I asked her what she’d miss, she said, “All the teeter-totters! Aaaaaand the garbage cans!”

Okie dokie.

She even rode on the rocking horse – a ride that she’s always been afraid of. How appropriate that she finally decide to tackle it on her last night here.

(That’s the look of ‘dear god stop taking my picture’. She was saying, “No more cheese!” because I kept urging, “Say cheese! Say cheese!”)

We even left a little good-bye note to the park.

This will be my last post for a while. I’ll be too busy with moving stuff to blog – though I may post a pic or 2. The next time I sit down to write, it’ll be from my new house! Yippee!!

Crunch time!

The countdown to moving day is on! T minus 2 days until closing and 3 days until we move! We spent the weekend packing, packing and packing. We’re pretty much down to bare bones now, though it feels like there is a lot left.

299296_10150341229723738_512628737_8181006_208229360_n

Every night when I lay in bed, I think of all that we have to do. Clean the new house before we move in. Pack the remaining items to get ready for the movers. Move everything. Clean our old house. Plus other stuff like buying new furniture (I know this can wait a bit but I don’t want to put it off too long), unpacking, organizing and settling in. I worry about everything that could go wrong, all the money, the closing, getting Munchkin adjusted, getting Samson adjusted, etc.

Not to mention Isabella’s birthday is in there. My mom has offered to host the family get together at their house and she’s making Isabella’s favorite – fettuccine alfredo. I ordered the cake today. Munchkin specifically asked for a Curious George cake. When I called the store they said they didn’t have a kit for that. I pretty much told the guy I would have to go elsewhere because that was all she asked for and dammit, she was going to get it! He said he’d call around. He found someplace that had a C.G. edible overlay and said he’d go out and buy it for us. Winning!! Now that’s what I call customer service!

2 more days of work and then the madness can begin!
