Bringing Home the Gold!

Switching jobs a few months ago was a decision I’m really happy with. Not only do I have great opportunities for moving my career forward, getting awarded a bonus every quarter and the chance to be a part of a large company that’s really growing, I also get other perks like free tickets to baseball games and the opportunity to…

…meet an Olympian!

Our company is one of the sponsors for the 2012 Olympic Games in London and as part of that, have several athletes that they are supporting. Many of them are going to make visits to our offices to meet the associates and we get to take our picture with them!

The one in Omaha that came today was Anna Tunnicliffe and she’s on the sailing team.

The photo session was pretty quick. No time to chat! I went in, shook her hand and introduced myself, smiled for the camera (of course I blinked the first time so they had to redo it – thank God for digital cameras or else  I would have looked like a doof in my once-in-a-lifetime pic with Anna), wished her luck and that was it!

Got the pic back 10 minutes later.

Ok first of all, I know I’m really, really pale. Like practically translucent. But standing next to someone who spends most of her time out in the sun on the water, I look positively ghostly! Mental note: next time apply some lipstick or pinch your cheeks!!

Later, during an internal town hall meeting, another Olympian, David Oliver, got up and spoke. He was very inspirational (and funny)! I am proud to work for a company that supports these fine athletes and people.

Trader Family Road Trip – Day 6: Mil-WALK-ee

Waking up on Tuesday morning I had a plan in my head for the day. We had a list of things to see and some of them had time constraints. Here was the schedule:

Busy, but doable, right? Well, sure if everything lined up. And of course, it didn’t.

We got off to a late start and didn’t leave the hotel until around 11 a.m. The breakfast there (Courtyard by Marriott) was FAB.U.LOUS! The only thing that would have made it better is if it had been continental. But alas it was not. Still, very yummy and the wait staff was top-notch. It cost $30 for the 3 of us, which was a little pricey, but not the most expensive breakie I’ve ever had on vacation. That honor goes to our hotel breakfast in NYC a few years ago. They had a buffet and we thought, great, that’ll be easy. When the bill came for $75 (for 2 of us), I peed all over myself! You better believe we went back for 3rds and 4ths to get our money’s worth. I even stuffed fruit in my purse.  Lesson learned I guess!

Anywho, we got downtown around 11:30 and parked. That gave us 15 min. to find the Fonz, take pics, and find the ladybug building. We found Fonzie first:

6.28-25

“Like oh my God, Fonzie is so dreamie!” I love how I’m standing on my tip toes and then slouching over. I look like a giant…or a ragdoll!

6.28-26

“Eeeyyyy” CJ looks really thrilled here. I think he was trying not to look drunk and then ended up looking bored.

6.28-27

“Um, who’s this guy? Can we go now?” She didn’t quite get it but that’s ok. Someday she’ll look back at this picture and be thankful we brought her here! Or maybe not. Whatevs.

After that we started to walk in search of the ladybug building until we realized it was 11:45 and we had to get to the museum, park and be at the BBS building in 15 minutes! Eek! So we raced back to the car and sped away. We actually got to the BBS like 5 minutes early and had time to walk a bit. I had told CJ in the car that the only other time I was in Milwaukee was with a college friend who brought me home for Thanksgiving. As we were walking to the museum I saw 3 people walking toward us. I swear to you it was that college friend with her mom and hubbie. But in my head I was thinking it couldn’t be because she lives down south now. I almost shouted out to her but stopped myself because I didn’t want to look like an idiot. Now I wish I would have said something as I’m 99% sure it was her. (Sara – if that was you – doh!)

Anyway, at noon on the dot, the roof of the BBS started to close. It slowly lowered its wings down, down, down.

Here’s what it looks like fully opened:

6.28-15

Here’s the halfway point as it’s closing:

6.28-16

And here’s when it’s all the way closed:

6.28-18

It then opened back up again. The whole process took about 15 minutes. It was pretty cool. They play music during it too which was a nice surprise.

We were starving by that point and set out to find a place for lunch. Now, you’d think that in downtown Milwaukee, right off the lake, there would be a ton of restaurants. You would be wrong. We walked. And walked. And walked. For 90 MINUTES! There was nothing! No vendors, no fast food, no nothing. Just apartments and parks. Finally we said screw it and went back to the car. Turns out there is a cafe inside the science museum that is next door to the art museum. We ate in there. It was about 1:45 by now, I had blisters all over my feet, we were all hungry and tired and hot and therefore cranky. But dammit we had more to see!

We opted to forgo anything that involved walking so we drove to Jelly Belly as their tour was all done on a train.

6.28-41

The tour was a bit disappointing. You basically rode around the warehouse and watched videos on how they make the candy. We didn’t get to go in the factory itself, which is what I had hoped for. Still, it was free and we got Jelly Belly samples at the end so, all in all, not too bad!

6.28-37

We were tempted to head to Madison from there but it looked like Gambrinus might be on the way so we went in search of that. Turns out he is in the beer garden of a bar that was closed. But that didn’t stop us from sneaking a pic through the gate!

6.28-47

And of course we had to get one of CJ posing with him, er sort of.

6.28-48

I particularly like that CJ’s wearing an X-Men shirt. Looks like Wolverine could use a beer!

After that it was straight on to Madison, with a stop for dinner. After the lunch fiasco, we weren’t about to take chances on that one!

We got to Madison around 7 which gave us time to get Isabella to bed, soak in the hot tub and watch a movie. We got a suite complete with kitchenette and sitting area, which Munchkin thought was so cool. She had fun jumping on the bed (we only allow that on vacation… ;)), running around and pretending to talk on the phone.

6.29-1

That’s it for day 6! Only 1(ish) more days to go until this vacation is over and I stop boring you all with my pics and stories!

Like Mother Like Daughter

Isabella has always been a great little shopping buddy. She sits in the cart with no problem and is content to ride around and look at stuff. She doesn’t complain or whine or cry. Sometimes she’ll start to get antsy but it’s easily curtailed with a snack or toy.

Consequently, I love taking her shopping with me. Yesterday was a whole other matter though.

Omaha is going through a heat wave right now. It’s over 100 degrees out there, and that’s before the heat index is factored in. Needless to say we were looking for indoor activities during the weekend. At least for me and Isabella. CJ headed to the lake for sand volleyball on Sunday but it was way too hot for Munchkin and I had no desire to be out in the heat either. So she and I were planning to go grocery shopping and then kick back at home and enjoy a beautiful thing called air conditioning.

I ran out Sunday morning for a meetup with friends and on my way home (about 12:30) got a call from CJ that someone was coming to look at our house at 2pm. I ran home and we frantically cleaned and straightened while Isabella napped. All of a sudden I got some cramps and ran in to the bathroom, hit with a case of the runs. Yes, I’m talking to you about poop again!

Great timing. Here I am trying to clean and get ready to dash out when suddenly I am chained to the toilet. I took an Immodium and prayed.

Isabella woke up and we headed out. I still wasn’t feeling great but didn’t have any choice but to leave. We headed over to Target to grab lunch before shopping. As we’re sitting in the cafe eating, Isabella starts making her poop face.

And this was a SERIOUS poop face. Bright red face, flared nostrils, eyes staring in to space and her mouth in a firm grimace. Since we’re trying to make her aware of her potties I asked if she was pooping. She looked right at me, still red-faced, and said “No.”

Um, really? Honey, you’re not fooling anyone. Not even that emo kid refilling his Mountain Dew behind you.

So I went and changed her in the Target bathroom.

Then we hit the aisles and started filling up the cart. Not 5 minutes in to our shopping Isabella says, “Mommy, I pooped again.” Since her track record had already showed her to not be entirely truthful today, I nodded and smiled. Until it hit me – the smell. She wasn’t kiddin’ this time!

I figured I would shop my way up to the front and then change her again. By the time we got up front, the smell was unbearable. I’m pretty sure we were getting nasty looks from other shoppers too. So I hurried to the restroom again. This time it was Munch who had the runs. It was a mess to clean and I almost used up all the wipes. I did use my last diaper so I prayed that she would hold off on number 2 #3 until we got home.

When we got back to our cart Munchkin decided she was done with riding and needed to be carried. I really wasn’t feeling up to holding her and pushing the cart and trying to pick out good bananas all at the same time. I told her to walk or ride. She chose walk. But only for a few feet at which point she grabbed my leg and started crying, “Mommy hold you! Mommy hold you!” To avoid the impending scene, I picked her up.

I could still smell the stench. I thought it was just from the trauma of it all. Then Isabella said “I still smell poopoos mommy.” Great. If the 2 year old could smell it and articulate it, it must be real.

I looked and she hadn’t gone again. However I discovered that the bottom of her shirt was wet and “pooed” on from before. And I was holding her and therefore had poo guts on my arm. Oh ick. I put her back in the cart. I didn’t care if she was crying. I didn’t want to hold her with poop all over her back!

Of course I didn’t have a change of clothes with me (for either of us). So off to the children’s department we ran and Isabella got to pick out a new Sesame Street shirt.

By this point I was done with shopping. Screw my list. I wanted to go home. I paid for our stuff and headed out to the car. As soon as we stepped outside we were hit with the soupy humid air and Isabella said, “It’s hot mommy. Can you blow on it?”  If only I had that power then we would be rich! But alas, I don’t.

I unloaded the groceries to the car and quickly changed Isabella in to her new shirt. I also wiped the cart down as best I could. Then we headed home. I was praying the perspective buyers would be gone so that I could have my house back – and a fresh stack of diapers. Fortunately they were and the rest of the afternoon was fine. No more exploding diarrhea (for either of us).

I did however feel well enough to have a hot caramel sundae later that night. Hey, it was National Ice Cream Day. It would be unAmerican NOT to have some.

Trader Family Road Trip–Day 5: To the Land of Cheese!

Day 5 did not go nearly according to plan. Originally, we had hoped to take a ferry from Muskegon, MI to Milwaukee, WI (the 3 of us and our car!). It would take a couple hours and we’d be there by noon. However, I didn’t realize that we needed to make reservations in advance. Thinking back I should have known but for some reason it never crossed my mind. Unfortunately, because we didn’t make a reservation, they didn’t have any openings for a car. So we had a few options: 1) stay in Manistee longer, 2) go home early, 3) drive up and over Lake Michigan or 4) drive down and around Lake Michigan. After much research and discussion, we decided to go down and around. It was a 5 1/2 hour drive so we’d be in Milwaukee by dinner. We thought that was the best way to go!

But first we wanted to meet up with CJ’s sister and dad for breakfast and to shop around their downtown. We had a nice morning and I got some sassy red shoes for 60% off!

We were on the road by 11 and ready for adventure!

And it wasn’t long before we found it. After driving for a while (after stopping for lunch and then hitting the road again) Isabella was starting to get antsy. We needed a place to stop and play so I pulled off in to the next town that came along. Surely this town would have a park. We drove around for a while and finally found it. Turns out it was a pretty sweet park AND it was connected to a beach!

6.27-1

We played on the equipment for a while and then wandered down to the beach, which stretched for miles. The sand was so soft and fine and there were hardly any people there. It was a perfect place to stretch our legs!

6.27-5

Isabella enjoyed digging and walking in the sand. There was a dog there that she enjoyed watching. She found some cool rocks and shells too!

6.27-8

But eventually we had to get back on the road or we’d never get to Wisconsin!

We finally pulled in to Milwaukee around 6:30 pm. On the way in we saw the Allen-Bradley Clock tower at the Rockwell Automation headquarters (which is the largest 4-faced clock in the world – yes even bigger than Big Ben):

6.27-13

We also saw Miller Park, home of the Brewers.

6.27-17

We really wanted to get to our hotel at a decent time so we could all get to bed. Every night prior it had been nearly 9 p.m. before Isabella got to sleep and we didn’t want to disrupt her schedule too much. So we found a hotel and settled in. CJ went down to the bar and relaxed with a beer while I hung back in the room and caught up on emails. I caught a little TV too and then crashed.

It wasn’t a super exciting day as it was mostly driving but we still had fun. And we were looking forward to tomorrow’s adventure!

A Mother Never Forgets

Every morning, before I leave for work, I stop in Isabella’s room to give her a good-bye kiss and hug, wishing her a great day and telling her how much I’ll miss her. She always asks me to pick her up and she hugs me. She never wants me to leave. I love that tradition we have.

But none of that happened this morning.

She was up a little earlier than usual, cutting in to CJ’s shower time. So in order to still sneak in a quick washing, he set up the portable DVD player in her room with Elmo’s World on it. He didn’t start it though, just left it on the menu screen so that I could start it after saying my good-byes.

I went in and the first thing she said was “Elmo’s on mommy!” Oh goodie.

I asked her for a kiss and she said “NOOOOO!!!” and ran to the opposite side of the crib. I walked to that side and asked for a hug. “NOOOOO!!” and she ran away again.

Fine. I asked if she wanted Elmo and she exclaimed, “OK!” So I pushed play and then leaned in to give her a kiss on the cheek, at which point she batted me away.

WTF?! I’ve been replaced by a little red monster who can only refer to himself in the third person!

No worries. I’ll remember this the first time she asks to borrow the car, stay out late, go on a date, needs some money or wants to buy that really cute pair of jeans. I’ll look at her, scream “NOOOOO!!” and run to the opposite side of the room.

Because believe you me, I have the memory of an elephant (just ask CJ) and I’m not afraid to use it!
