You Capture: Summertime

This last week has been HOT! As such, we’ve spent most of our time inside, trying to stay cool. I also had a death in the family this week and therefore wasn’t very focused on taking pictures. But I did get a few that will work!

summertime eggs

When I was walking out to my car, getting ready to meet a friend for lunch, I saw these broken eggs lying on the sidewalk. I didn’t see a nest or any birds around so I hope the little baby is ok.

summertime garden

If it’s too hot to go outside and pick your own vegetables, might as well do it in a fake garden! On Sunday I took Isabella to the Omaha Children’s Museum for a couple hours. Normally we would go to sand volleyball but it was reaching 100 degrees and that’s too hot for Munch to be out playing. She enjoyed herself at the museum and particularly liked picking these “vegetables” and putting them in a basket. Then she put them all back, like a good girl. Only, she put them back upside down. Oh well.

summertime pointing

They have a little water park thing there too with rubber ducks and boats and fountains in it. Next to it they have a hand dryer in case you get too wet and need to dry off. She was pointing that out to some guy while holding a rubber ducky.

Well that’s it for this week! Head over to Beth’s to see what other talented folks have done for this theme!

And I Didn’t Even Staple my Finger!

I channeled my inner Nate Berkus and worked on some home projects on Saturday! While CJ lent me a hand here and there, I’m happy to report that I did most of it by myself and it all turned out awesome!

The first project was the easiest. I simply changed out the hardware on our kitchen cabinets. The old handles were brass and well worn.

The new ones are brushed nickel and while the change is small and subtle, I think it really makes a big difference.

It updates it and adds that more modern look. I also put these new handles in my bathroom (we had already updated CJ’s when we redid his bathroom a couple years ago).

The next project was the most labor intensive of the two. I decided to reupholster our dining room chairs. The dining room set we have is over 100 years old and has been handed down over 3 generations. My great-grandparents bought it and then gave is to my grandparents. My grandma gave it to CJ and me when we bought our house 5 years ago.

We really love it but let’s face facts. After 100 years, things are bound to get beat up and worn. At some point I would like to have the whole set refinished and shore up but for now, we settled for changing out the maroonish fabric on the seats to something more modern, that matched better with our house.

Here are the before shots:

This whole project actually turned in to an archeological experiment. See, when we took the seats off the chair, we discovered that it had been reupholstered 4 times already! We had to remove at least one layer before putting the new one on so as to not have it be too thick. We decided that for one of the seats, we would pull all the layers off, just to see what the other fabrics looked like! It was really fun to see each new reveal!

Ok, so, the maroon fabric above is the first layer. Here’s what the second layer looked like:

(Psst, say “hi” to Samson laying in the background!)

Here’s a close-up:

DSC01533

While flowery is generally not my thing, I do think this is a very elegant pattern that matched the set nicely. I try to picture how it all looked and I bet it was very pretty.

The interesting thing about this one is how it looked on the back:

DSC01556

Pretty wild, eh?

Now here’s the 3rd layer!

DSC01540

(And now Samson’s asleep. Guess he wasn’t as excited by this project as we were!)

DSC01547

This one is even more elegant. You can also see how the fabric gets more worn and faded with each layer.

And now for the 4th, and last, layer!

(And Samson’s up again!)

DSC01548

This one is really faded. It’s hard to tell from the pic but it’s a green color with peachy/beige flowers. I think this was the original which means this fabric is over 100 years old. Wow! I think the 2nd layer is my favorite, which is odd given that it’s flowers. There’s just something about it that fits the set!

Here are all of them together:

DSC01558

Apparently my family likes green and maroon since they alternated green, maroon, green, maroon with each change. But now the Trader’s have to mix it up yo!

And the big reveal of the new look! We wanted something brighter and more neutral. A color that would play off our new tablecloth but still work in the new house should we decide to change color schemes. So we went with a silky gold fabric that has a watermark type design (which is hard to see in the pics).

Here’s how it looks with the table:

And here’s how the whole look comes together:

I’m super happy with how it all turned out. I really think it brightens up the room and, like the new cabinet pulls, modernizes it. Now here’s hoping it’s enough to sell the house!

Trader Family Road Trip–Day 4 (cont.)–Doo it!

I already told you about much of what happened on our 4th day. The rest I’ll talk about now!

The major part of the day was going to the sand dunes. It had been planned for a while and we really didn’t know what to expect. Would it be really bumpy and loud? Would Isabella be safe on it?

We got to Mac Wood’s Dune Rides and saw a line up of “Big Mac” trucks waiting to take people out. Apparently this is a big thing to do!

6.26-20

When it was our turn everyone eagerly piled in to one of the trucks. We had a big group and took up the whole truck on our own. CJ, Munchkin and I took the front seat, next to the driver, because we figured it would be the least bumpy and scary for Isabella. We all strapped in and were off!

Our driver was super great. Really nice, funny and most importantly a good driver! He took us out over hills and dunes and around sandy curves. The scenery was just beautiful.

6.26-26

(that’s Lake Michigan in the background)

He went just fast enough so that the curves felt a little shaky and the hills gave you that stomach-drop feeling when you went over them, but not so fast that it was out of control. I felt safe the whole time. Our driver would stop at various points to tell us some history and show us scenic spots. The sun was beating down too so it was hot.

Isabella was ok at first. She was a bit shaken by the loud truck and some of the hills but seemed relatively at ease so long as she had her woobie and was safe in the arms of mom or dad.

6.26-22

When we got up to Lake Michigan they let us get out and take pics.

Here’s our whole group, in the truck:

6.26-23

(That’s us in the front seat and CJ’s 86 year old dad is there in the 2nd to last row, in front of the bars. He surprises me by all that he does!)

Me and my hubby.

6.26-28

And with Isabella.

6.26-33

And the whole Trader side of the family.

6.26-31

(That’s our niece Kristin (the grad that we were all celebrating), Isabella, CJ’s sis Shellee, Dad Fred, CJ, Me and Shellee’s husband Chuck)

They also had a big chair there set up as a picture spot. It was totally touristy. So of course I was all over it!

6.26-35

The whole ride took about 45 minutes. Toward the end Isabella got more scared and the only way she felt safe was to snuggle up under daddy’s chin and hold his hand.

6.26-38

She looks so small and fragile! She was such a trooper though and I was very proud of her!

If you’re ever in this part of Michigan, I’d definitely recommend a sand dune tour. It was fun, adventurous, and scenic all at once! Maybe we’ll go back when Isabella is older and have her try again…

Wake Up!

For months now, Isabella has enjoyed this fun little game called “wake up!” It’s simple really. All you do is pretend to sleep (actually you don’t have to pretend – you can really be asleep) and she will run up and yell “WAKE UP!” in a really high pitched loud voice! She thinks it’s the funniest thing ever!

She also enjoys it in reverse. Only, when we yell “wake up” to her, we also tickle her. Double whammy!

Tonight we were playing that game on the bed and I grabbed my camera to take a pic of her after I yanked off a pillow and yelled “wake up!” When the flash went off she said “The sun’s inside mama”. I explained to her the whole concept of ‘flash’ on a camera and then she asked for more. “More flash mama!”

Here is the series of pics I took:

We both had so much fun!

By the way, just a few weeks ago she started switching between calling me “mommy” and “mama”. For some reason when she says mama it’s like so totally adorable and just melts my heart each time. She can pretty much have anything she wants when she says it.

“Oobie please mama?” Yes of course!

“Can I run with scissors mama?” Sure!

“Can I play with this knife mama?” Anything for you sweetie!

You Capture: Patriotic

This assignment should have been easy given that it was the 4th of July weekend. However, our holiday wasn’t as surrounded by patriotism as it usually is. We didn’t attend any parties (usually we’re invited to a handful of them), didn’t light or watch any fireworks and didn’t go to any parades. It was pretty much a quiet weekend given that we were recovering from vacation.

So I had to stretch a bit. You won’t find any pics of flags or soldiers or bright lights in the sky. Instead my pictures are more a celebration of Americana.

One way we celebrated was to attend the College World Series Home Run Derby at the new TD Ameritrade Park. We ate hot dogs and watched baseball. Only way we could have been more American is to throw in some apple pie!

patriotic baseball

It was a hot evening and so we didn’t stay for the whole thing. But Isabella had a good time while we were there. This pic of her playing with a blue ball, wearing her hat and with the baseball field in the background seemed just perfect for a series on patriotism and America!

Our 4th of July day was spent with family. We went to my parent’s house and played outside before eating. The kids played in the pool while the adults played Frisbee.

patriotic family

However, before the Frisbee game got going, the adults sat around watching the kids. I have a feeling this scene was played out in houses across the country – family sitting around watching kids play and fireworks go off.

The kids loved playing in the pool. Even Isabella! She seems to have inherited my innate fear of water so she was hesitant to get in. I finally got her to stand in it without crying and eventually she started enjoying herself.

patriotic pool

I was so proud of her. I know the fear she felt and I have never been able to overcome it. So the fact that she got in there and faced it was super awesome!

patriotic pool 2

I like this one of all the cousins playing. The 4 of them crammed in to the pool and splashing around! They were in there for a good hour too!

I hope everyone else had a great holiday filled with celebrations of America and family! To see more patriotic pics, head on over to I Should Be Folding Laundry!
