Expenses

I haven’t blogged in a while about the progress of our budget and financial goals. That’s because there really isn’t any progress. We were doing so good for a while. Then it came time to get the house in order and it seemed like we were spending money left and right. We had to buy cleaning products, paint, supplies, trim, rent a storage unit, and on and on. I was still trying to keep spending in check but after a while just gave up.

Then we started planning for our big summer vacation. We’re taking an 8 day road trip up to Michigan and coming home through Wisconsin. 8 days on the road with a toddler means being prepared and having lots of supplies. We probably could have flown to MI for cheaper but 1) we didn’t want to deal with the hassle of checking/carrying a car seat and stroller and pack n’play and all her other gear, and 2) we actually enjoy long road trips. They’re fun and adventurous. However, all the supplies we needed for that – toys/books to keep Isabella busy in the car, snacks, luggage for her, clothes, oil change, and so on – cost money.

Between the house and the trip, our credit card is getting a work out.

I’ve tried to be somewhat frugal. I went to the library and borrowed some audio books instead of buying them. Any toys I bought were generally from the dollar bin at Target, on sale, or given to us by my parents. The snacks we bought at Sam’s Club in bulk. I think we’ve been smart about it, but spending is still spending.

Every time I pull out the credit card I think of Suze Orman or Mary Hunt or any number of frugal bloggers that I read and feel a tad guilty. But whaddya gonna do?

All hope is not lost though. We’ve had some extra money flow in here and there and I’ve applied it toward the credit card. So while we’re charging a lot, we’re also paying off some too. Are they evening out? Probably not. But at least we’re making a dent.

I’ll be happy when life settles down a bit and we can get back to better spending habits.

We leave for our trip next week and I’m excited about it. I haven’t traveled in a while and am getting the itch! We will have fun and most importantly, get to show Isabella that there’s more to the world than Omaha and Council Bluffs. I am so looking forward to seeing her take in everything, meet new people, learn new things and have fun. That’s really what it’s all about. Yes, I want to pay down some debt and I know we have to reduce spending to do that. But we also have to enjoy life. And if that means buying my daughter a souvenir on our trip or splurging for ice cream every night, we will do it!

On a side note, here was my conversation with Isabella tonight as we were getting ready for her bath:

  • Me [reaching in to the hall closet and discovering we only had one clean towel]: Looks like we need to do some laundry!
  • Isabella: At the laundry mat!
  • Me: Where did you learn about the Laundromat?
  • I: Elmo told me.
  • Me: Did Elmo go to the Laundromat?
  • I: No, Tully did.
  • Me: Oh. What did Tully do there?
  • I: Washed his shirts!
  • Me: How did he do that?
  • I: In the machine!
  • Me: Oh I see. What else did he do?
  • I: Go to the playground! Can we go to the playground mommy?

She’s already a pro at manipulating the conversation to go her way. Silly girl!

Have a good weekend!

Showing it All

I was out of town Thursday night and Friday, attending a professional development day for an organization I belong to. When I returned home on Friday I was looking forward to spending some time with my family and then relaxing on the couch, catching up on shows.

The universe had other ideas.

I got a call around 7 p.m. from the realtor that someone was going to come by on Saturday at 2:15 to look at our house. Just like that my relaxing night was turned in to one of frantically trying to clean and get little projects done that would make a difference on how our house shows.

Saturday morning was the same way. Clean, clean, maintenance item, clean, paint, clean, straighten, and clean. Oh, with Isabella play time and eating thrown in the mix. And I think I showered somewhere in there. CJ was mowing the lawn and doing some other jobs as well. We finished up and left the house by 2. I breathed a sigh of relief as we pulled out of the driveway.

But at the same time, the nerves and doubts kicked in.

What if they don’t like it? What if they think it’s a dump? Did I straighten those books? Did we remember to open the blinds? What if they open the kennel and let Samson out and he bites someone and they sue us?  Ok so that last one is pretty far fetched, and Samson’s not even aggressive, but still the thought came up.

It’s very personal to open your house up to strangers and trust that they will treat it with respect. You know that they are opening your cupboards and closets; poking around in your drawers. They may see my toiletries and clothes; glance at our leftovers and laundry. What will they think of us?

Will they track mud in? Will they scratch up the walls? Will they take something?

All of these thoughts were going through our heads as we awaited word from the realtor. When we got home Saturday night, there were subtle signs that someone had been there. A closet door was left open. Some lights were off that we had left on. It was weird.

Found out that the gal liked the house a lot, and many of the features, but ultimately wants a home with a living and family room, which we don’t have. So, it was good to hear some nice things and know that our house presents well. Tomorrow there is a realtor tour from 10-noon and then another showing at 5pm. Sunday is the open house. We have to constantly keep it clean and tidy, which is no small feat with a toddler! But it will all be worth it.

Hopefully soon. Now I must go – have to dust the living room and make sure all is in its place. The show must go on!

The Neighborhood

Now that our house is on the market,

for sale

I’ve been thinking a lot about our neighborhood, and specifically our neighbors. We really do have good ones and have been lucky. Every neighborhood has that one house that is a black eye on an otherwise pretty face, and ours is no exception. With that in mind, and having recently read this post by Zadge about her crazy neighbor, I thought I would share with you some Tales from our Hood.

First of all, for the longest time we didn’t know the names of many neighbors. We had nicknames for them all. We still use those nicknames even though we know their real names now (or at least I do…CJ doesn’t because he’s nicer than me). I’ll use those nicknames here, to spare the innocent.

The first neighbors we met when we moved in were The Potheads. This is a couple with 2 kids – a boy and a girl. As we were unloading the truck, Mr. Pothead came over and greeted us. He was very nice but he chain smokes. So does the Mrs. She would flick her cigs in our yard as she was pulling out of the driveway. The kids were the kind that have no boundaries and would constantly be over in our yard, all up in our bidness. We called them the Potheads because we heard a story that they used to grow the stuff in their garage. Rumor has it they offered to make some “special” candles for the local elementary school craft sale. The school said thanks but no thanks. I don’t think they grow or smoke pot anymore and their kids are grown up now (both in high school) and have turned out fine. Despite our initial misgivings, they are a nice family and though we’ve never asked, would help us out in a pinch. I’ll remember that next time I need some candles.

The next neighbors to come in to our lives were Superman and his family. No, we don’t really live next to Clark Kent (though that would totally be awesome and suck at the same time) (awesome because we’d have a super hero next to us to keep us safe) (sucky because his house would be targeted a lot).  We call him Superman because he has a huge Superman decal on the back of his truck. They have 3 boys. Or 4. I’m still not sure. They all look-alike and I can never keep track of them. At one time they had a chocolate lab who would hop our fence to come play with Samson, who didn’t waste any time showing him who was boss!

100_2587

Superman and his wife are now divorced. She and the boys still live in that house, which turns out is her moms. I’ve never talked to Superman. He waved to me once when he was out playing catch with the boys (which is the only thing I’ve ever seen him do…never mowing the lawn or going to work or shoveling…just playing catch once in a while. Maybe that’s why they’re divorced). I’ve talked to his wife several times. She’s very sweet. The boys are good too, though wild at times. They used to ride their bikes across our lawn which bugged the bejeezusout of me. I almost accidentally on purpose backed over them one time when they zoomed behind my car. They don’t do it anymore.

Then there are the neighbors across the street and next door to us who are the nicest people ever. The ones next door are down home folk who seem to have walked straight off the ranch. He has a rusty old truck and wears cowboy boots and hats. She wears a straw hat, is always tan and says things like “warsh”. They seem to have a constant stream of people staying with them too. For a while it was their son (who’s in the army), daughter-in-law and their kids. Then it was a niece. Then her dad. Then their son again. Right now it’s just the 2 of them and I think it’s driving them a little batty.

The other super nice couple has a son who is graduating from high school this year. We’re going to his party on Sunday. They have baby-sat Isabella for us several times, which is so sweet of them. They just love her. They have a dog who loves/hates Samson. He runs to the window and barks every time he sees The Big Dude outside. But when they try to bring him over to play, he cowers and just rolls over as if to say, “Dude, I know you’re bigger, stronger and more tenacious than me. Let’s cut to the chase. Here, sniff my butt while I die of humiliation.”

Behind us is Red and his wife. Never did find out their real names. They are super gardeners though. Half of their yard is a garden, with cucumbers in back, along our fence. Some of them end up growing through the fence and in to our yard. Samson likes to pick them off and have a nice snack every once in a while. Then he goes over and pees on the rhubarb. Guess he’s not a fan.

Finally, there is the neighborhood Font, as in font of information. You know, the one person on the street who knows everything that is going on. The person who hears all the stories and is the go-to-one-stop-shop for information. She’s the one who told me about Girl with Hands in Pants. Remember how I mentioned the house on the street that is an eye sore? Well that’s where GWHIP lived. They were living there when we moved in. They don’t live there anymore. That house is a rental and they were weird people. The kids ran wild and were a bad influence on the other neighborhoods rugrats. GWHIP was the oldest (probably about 14 then) and was big – tall and, um, stout. She had blonde hair that was always dirty. I kind of felt bad for them. Anyway, the Font has 2 boys. They are grown but still live at home. I guess GWHIP had a crush on one or both and would walk slowly in front of their house, hoping to see them through the windows. One night, they looked out to see her standing on their sidewalk, with her hand down the front of her pants, staring in the windows (hence the name). The Font ran outside and told the girl to go home. The family moved away eventually and their house was left vacant. The landlord even abandoned it. It was truly falling apart until a couple bought it just a few months ago (for a steal) and started working on it.

That’s about it for the neighbors we really know. There are some others that we’ve met over the years – Man with German Shepherd, The Walker, Daycare Lady, Motorcycle Dude, Fergus Dog Guy and so on. But the ones above are the neighbors who we’ve known the most. I’m sure we’ll meet all kinds of new and interesting people in the new house. I’ll miss the ones we have now. The way the world works, we’ll probably never see them again, which is sad. But who knows, maybe GWHIP will turn out to be Isabella’s high school teacher one day.

Lord help me if that day comes.

Officially Official…and other stuff

Our house is officially on the market! Phew! I’m exhausted from all the work we’ve done to the house but it’s not over yet. We still  have a “to do” list of small items that need to be checked off. Then we have to continue our search to find a new house for us. And once that is done – we actually have to move ! Eek!

I’m tired just thinking about it…or maybe I’m tired from this darn summer cold I still have. We’ve now entered phase 2. Phase 1 was a constant sore throat and aches. Phase 2 is a REALLY stuffy nose.  I feel like someone inflated balloons up in my sinuses. I just hope there’s no phase 3!

I started P90X today! Well, I actually started it 2 weeks ago but with all of life’s craziness and getting sick, I only got 2 days under my belt. So I’m starting over today.  I’m not following the P90X diet plan. I don’t have the book and trying to find info online is confusing. I’ve gleaned that there are several phases and the first one is high protein, low carbs, so I’m trying to do that. I will allow myself to eat some carbs, just pushing to get a little more protein in, to build up the muscle.   Don’t worry, I won’t write a daily entry on it like I did with the Shred. That would be come a really long post after 90 days and you would get sick of it. But I will provide periodic updates as I progress. And I might whine a little too… Winking smile I can already feel the soreness setting in from this morning!

Mother’s Day was nice. Pretty laid back as we had to do work on the house. At one point, I was in the kitchen scrubbing cabinet doors and looked up to see CJ reading the paper while drinking his coffee, Isabella playing with her toys and Samson staring at me wanting food. Now, what’s wrong with that picture?

But we did have a nice afternoon at the museum and then dinner with the extended family. Isabella was crabby at times but all in all, a day with the family is a good day indeed! And the best part – I got a gift certificate for a 90 minute massage which I will be more than happy to use!

mom day

At the museum. Isabella was a little tired here from running around so much!

moms

Me, my mom and my sister. 2 of the best moms I know!

Believe it or not, I’m actually going to take the night off from house work. I plan to repaint my toenails and watch Dancing with the Stars. Go Hines!!

Weekend Wrap Up

New Year’s Eve

Crazy Busy

Did ya miss me?

I feel like I’ve been ignoring the blog. Life has been crazy and well, something’s gotta give. Between work, getting the house ready, family, outside activities and being sick, I’ve got no time left for thinking up witty blogs.

So here’s what’s been going on:

1. Operation Dream Home is moving at lightening speed! We’re nearing the home stretch of the first leg of the race and in a full out sprint. The realtors came over on Wednesday and think the house is ready so we’re filling out the paperwork tomorrow and it should be on the market by Monday! So excited and nervous at the same time. What if no one wants to buy and it’s on the market forever? Conversely, what if it sells really quickly and we don’t have a new house yet? We’ve started looking but I don’t think we’ve found “the one” yet. I keep telling myself it will all work out, and it will.

So every weekend in April has been filled with activity like this:

DSC01226

Painting or packing or cleaning or repairing or whatever. I’m ready for that phase to be over. Here’s what we have left from our big list:

  • Get a storage unit rented
  • Clean every room from top to bottom with a fine-tooth comb, including de-cluttering and organizing
    • Master Bedroom and bath
    • Isabella’s room
    • Samson’s room
    • Main Bathroom
    • Kitchen
    • Dining Room
    • Living Room
    • Entryway (3/4 way done)
    • Basement (3/4 of the way done)
    • Utility Room
    • Garage
  • Pack up all knick knacks and “personal” family type items (photos, etc)
  • Re-arrange furniture in a few of the rooms
    • Samson’s Room
    • Dining room
    • Living Room
    • Basement
  • Replace a sink or 2 and possibly a bathroom countertop
  • Clean up the yard and plant flowers, lay down mulch, etc
  • Put away all of Isabella’s toys and only keep out those that can fit in to a rubbermaid container
  • Paint or restain all baseboards and woodwork (about 1/2 of the way done)
  • Meet with a mortgage lender to see how much we can afford and how much of a loan we’ll get approved for
  • Repaint Master Bedroom and bath
  • Start looking for and buy a new house

2. Our household was hit with a plague and we’ve all been sick for a week now. Well, Isabella for a week. It started for her last Thursday. CJ got hit on Saturday and me on Monday. All week I’ve been feeling “blah” and have negative amounts of energy. Yet, there’s too much going on to allow me to lie around so I’m pushing myself to the max.

3. April and May are crazy busy months. Between birthdays, Easter, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day and graduations, we’ve been on the go every weekend. I’m ready for a break! We also had a wedding and a funeral within a week of each other – for the same guy. Depressing isn’t it?

4. The royal wedding occurred and I pretty much missed it all! I feel so out of touch!

5. A little old lady tried to hijack my car.

6. I totally missed this week’s You Capture because the day just flew by me. It was afternoon on Wednesday when I realized I’d missed it. *sigh* I had some cute ones this week too! So, I’m going to post them here for you all to see! The theme was “outside”. I shot all these one beautiful sunny afternoon, when Isabella, Samson and I were out playing (CJ was probably out front painting).

7. I did manage to spend some time last night getting my craft on. I had 2 projects to complete: 1) make a mother’s day gift for my mom and 2) make a fake plant arrangement for our living room.

See, if we leave real plants anywhere within toddler reach, she gets in them. But the realtors wanted us to have some greenery in one corner of the living room, so I had to go with silk. I was surprised how expensive it is to buy already made fake plants. Something like this would have cost $40. Instead, I made it myself for about $20. I think it turned out great!

And here’s the mom’s gift I made. It’s a mosaic stepping stone for the new rock garden my parents are putting in. I was going to have Isabella put her handprint in the middle but she threw a big fit so instead I wrote “Grandma’s” and drew a little flower to represent her garden.

DSC01228

I think she’ll love it!

And with that, it’s time for me to end this break, clock back in and go upstairs to do some cleaning. The checkout lady at Target told me to use oven cleaner on shower doors to get the soap scum off so I’m giving it a try. I will let you know how it turns out…
