Samson Stories: ‘Fraidy Cat

Samson would like you to believe he’s a big tough guy.

He plays rough.

He drools a lot and doesn’t even care.

Seriously, that is not a necklace or string in his mouth. It’s 2 long strands of drool that connected at the bottom. He’s so refined…

He refuses to back down.

And let’s face it, he’s a big dog. 90 lbs of solid muscle. Yet, when you get to know him, you see through the cracks in his exterior to the soft little puddle on the inside.

And you learn he’s a big scardy cat.

He hates water. Yes, we have a yellow lab, dogs built for hunting and snatching prey out of the water, and he’s doesn’t like to get wet.

He also refuses to go outside at night or early in the morning when it’s dark. I mean, there might be raccoons or something out there!

His newest phobia? The floor register in my bathroom.

As part of getting our house ready to put on the market, we are painting our master bedroom and bathroom. CJ started the project over the weekend and as part of it decided to buy new floor registers (the old ones were starting to get rusty). So there was a square-shaped hole in the floor of the bathroom for a couple of days.

Eee-gads!

I talked a while back about Samson’s typical day and an important part of it is “helping” me shower in the morning. As soon as I turn the water on, he comes in the bathroom and sits down against the wall. I give him a treat and then he lays down until I’m done showering. Keep in mind that my bathroom is small so there’s not a ton of room. Once he lays down, he takes up the whole floor and therefore must lay on the register.

Normally he likes that. In the winter, there is warm air spilling out and in the summer, cool air flows from the magic floor.

However, this weekend, there was a big hole where the register used to be and he was not having it. I went to take my shower on Sunday and he followed me in, per usual, but stayed as far away from the hole as possible. Then he left. Then he came back and stared at it. Then he stuck his head between my legs, looking up at me. I could see the fear in his eyes, like the hole might swallow him up. I tried to tell him it was ok, that he wouldn’t fall through if he laid on it, because he’s ginormous. But he didn’t believe me. So he scurried out in to the bedroom and refused to come back in.

The next day, the new floor register was in but Samson was still traumatized by the gaping hole from the day before so he came in the bathroom but sat next to the register, not on it. He wouldn’t get anywhere close. However, at some point during my shower, he fell asleep and in his unconsciousness, rolled over on to the register. He didn’t notice until I got out of the shower at which time he awoke, jumped up and ran out. Dork.

That’s the way it’s been all week. Finally yesterday he braved it, laid on the register and didn’t die. We were all grateful and there was much celebration.

CJ finished the bedroom last weekend but is still working on the bathroom, as time allows. Last night he got it all taped off and cut in. Naturally, that meant that there was blue tape all over the bathroom, including on the floor by the baseboard.

Danger Will Robinson!

As soon as Samson saw the blue tape this morning he backed up and slowly exited the bathroom. Then looked at me, looked back in the room and back at me, as if to say, “Mom! There is danger ahead! Enter at your own risk!”

It’ll probably take another week before he is brave enough to resume normal showering routines. Maybe I’ll mess with him and remove the rug.

I just hope we don’t ever get robbed by someone carrying a floor register or watering can. We’d be so screwed.

Weekend Wrap Up

This was a busy, busy weekend. My mind was in super hyper over-drive trying to get done as much as possible on our house. Friday evening I rented a storage unit for us and then bought some boxes and other necessities.

One thing I bought was new moisturizers. Ever since the “generic moisturizer debacle”, my skin has been jacked up. It’s been dry and flaky and a struggle – even though I threw that bad one away and bought a new one! I did a Google search and found 2 recommendations: one was to try CeraVe which is extra nourishing without being greasy or too heavy. The other was to use extra virgin olive oil which can penetrate deep without clogging pores. Sounded weird to me but I was desperate. So I bought both.

As soon as Isabella went to bed I washed my face and put on the olive oil. My first reaction – wow, this really smells like olives. Shocking I know. But seriously I was not expecting that! It took me some time to get used to. But it went on smooth and I felt confident it would work. I headed out to the living room and sat down on the ground to clean up Munchkin’s toys. Next thing I know there is a big Labrador tongue licking my face. He was like, sweet! Mom is now wearing food! Total score!

I had to fight him off for like 5 minutes until he finally gave up. I am not your own personal salad bar dude!

Then I started packing! Well, that’s not entirely true. First, I made a map of the house.

Cue OCD! I had to figure out a way to pack our house and keep some kind of system. Otherwise, when it came time to unpack, we would have no idea which boxes went where. Sooooo….I laid our house out on a diagram and gave each room a number (and I color coded it…hey I couldn’t resist!). I also gave letters to certain categories of items. Once a box was packed, I would write the room number and also the appropriate categories for the contents. For example, the dining room is room 6 and the first box had pictures and knick knacks in it so I wrote “6, A and C” on it.

When I told CJ the system he asked if he needed to memorize the map and then he gave me a look that said “when we vowed for better or worse, I thought the worse was the comfortable clothes/pajama thing. I didn’t realize it involved this craziness too.”  Hey, he’ll thank me when the move-in process is a snap!

So Friday night I got 3 boxes packed and the dining room essentially done. It felt good to get started.

Saturday was not a good day for Isabella and Samson. They just were not on the same page. He knocked her down twice with his big 90 pound butt. Then he tried to take a banana from her. She milked it every time too by throwing a big ole fit. She’s learning that if she cries or whines, she might get attention. Sometimes it’s for real, other times she’s working the system. Honey, I invented that trick. You have to get up pretty early to catch a worm like me (bonus point if you can name the movie that’s from). So the whole weekend has an undercurrent of toddler whining and crying fits in it. By the end I was, like, so over it to the point where I’d just let her cry while I changed her diaper/brushed her teeth/changed her clothes/washed her face/buckled her in the car seat. I know, I’m so evil.

Saturday afternoon was “me time”! I got  my hair cut/colored, then met some girlfriends for lunch and pedicures. We even stopped for frozen yogurt afterwards. Hey, you knew I would get sweets worked in there somewhere right?

It was very relaxing and just what I needed after a long week. On my drive home I checked my phone for messages and found a text from CJ that said the accountant had called and they had found a mistake with our taxes. Basically, instead of getting about $4000 in a refund, we had to pay $400. I blinked at it a couple times and then thought, I bet this is a late April Fool’s joke. That’s what I prayed for anyway.

Alas, it was not. I guess the software program the accountants use had a defect that caused 15 returns to be wrong. One of which was ours. Now I have to not only pay back the $900 from State that we’d already spent but write a new check for $400. Oh the humanity! And just when we’re trying to save money too.

Spent the rest of Saturday working around the house. We loaded up the car with boxes and took our first trip to the storage unit. Yippee! Isabella wasn’t as excited about it as we were. We drug some palettes in there, loaded in the boxes and then hit the road. On the way home we stopped at the park to let Isabella play. She had fun running up and down a big hill and digging in the sand. Then as a special treat we stopped by Dairy Queen for some ice cream. See how I worked sweets in there again? It’s a gift really.

Sunday I ran some errands with Munchkin while CJ worked at home. When I told her we were going shopping she said, “Shopping, yeah!” Start ‘em young, that’s what I say! Then all of us took advantage of the nice weather and worked out in the back yard pulling up weeds and dead plants. I love that Isabella is an outdoorsy girl. Makes it so much fun and gives us lots more ways for her to burn energy.

Now it’s on to another week – hopefully a productive one! We’ve made 3 trips to storage so far and will probably make one a day from now on, until everything that we need to get out of the house is gone. My car will be able to drive itself there before too long!

Girl’s Day

Last Friday I wrote about how I cherish my “girl’s nights” with Isabella. Well this week, we practically got a whole day!

See, for Father’s Day last year, I got CJ a coupon entitling him to one “day off” whenever he wanted to redeem it. Meaning, I would take time off work so that he could have the day to himself. Well he decided to split it in to 2 half days, so I took Wednesday morning off (the day after his birthday) and this afternoon.

Instead of describing it all to you, I will show you our day in pictures.

day sand

We went to the park! This was a different one then we went to last week. Isabella enjoyed running around in the sand and climbing on the jungle gym.

day friend

While we were there, another family came and Isabella played with the little girl, Alison, who showed her how to build a sand castle.

day hat

After taking a micro-nap (during which time I did my workout), Isabella decided to wear her heart basket as a hat!  Very stylish…

She also had fun pulling everything out of one of her drawers and throwing them on the floor (which obviously needs to be swept – good thing her room is next on the docket for cleaning!). She had to stand on her tip-toes to get to the items in the back.

day looking outside

After dinner, she and Samson were looking longingly out the back door in to the yard. I got the hint that she wanted to go out and play when she grabbed her coat off the couch and started running around yelling, “Outside! Outside!”

day listen

At one point, she stopped and pointed to her ear saying, “Listen…bird.” Sure enough, there were birds chirping! Tweet, Tweet!

day dog

Then she decided that the little garden dog we have needed to be moved. So she carried him all the way across the yard to here, where he napped.

day samson

Samson spent his time looking out at the neighborhood and watching the cat across the street.

Now Munchkin is in bed and I’m getting ready to put my art up on the site (or at least start it). Yeah!

Happy Birthday CJ!

Today, on the Ides of March, is CJ’s birthday! I love birthdays because they mean celebrating the life of someone you love and care about. Instead of writing a big long essay about how much I love my husband (lots and lots!), I will instead leave you with this: CJ is the best guy I know. He’s an AMAZING dad, who I am privileged to have staying at home with our little girl all day, and a loving husband.

Happy birthday Boo! I love you!!

Now, here are some pics from birthdays past…

CJ is currently out with his volleyball team, celebrating the fact that he’s turning 39 again! Hence, I am taking the morning off work tomorrow so that he can sleep in and recover from his hangover night out! It’s a win-win for both of us!
