2011: A look back

Today has been great. Had a short morning at work, got the oil changed in my car, saw a great movie (“Sherlock Holmes 2” – RDJ and Jude Law – hello!), and then spent a fabulous evening with Isabella. We even had fun cleaning up! When we were done she said, “My playroom looks really nice mommy!”

I’m feeling really positive about life right now and why not? I have it pretty darn good. Sure, there have been some tough times, but who doesn’t have those? And I’m a firm believer that the hard moments are the ones that make you stronger.

2011 was a VERY busy year for our family. There were plenty of ups and downs and lots of changes.

January

The year started off mixed. On the one hand, I was energetic and excited for my resolutions and in what was sure to be a great year. However, on January 5 something terrible happened in our city. The vice principal at a local high school was shot and killed by a student. This is tragic in so many ways but it hit home for me because 1) many of my friends went to that high school and I would have had I not chosen to go the route of private school, and 2) the vice principal was my Uncle’s cousin’s wife, with whom he was close. A very sad start to the year for those affected.

February

Bad = The Steelers lost the Super Bowl.

Good = fun family times spent playing in the snow and celebrating our love for each other!

March

I ended 2 series on this site, Annexed and The OCp. It was bittersweet as I enjoyed it and know many of you did too, but also, it was time to say good-bye.

We also started the process of getting our house ready to put on the market!

April

Most of April was spent frantically working on the house as we wanted it on the market in May. Lots of time and money devoted to that.

I also started a new job midway through the month!

May

Our house officially went on the market in May! It was exciting and scary at the same time because it meant this was all really happening!

I had one really crazy day and got out of a speeding ticket just by being a good person. I totally rule. AND I spent the night with Josh Groban, with CJ’s blessing!

June

In June we went on a big road trip to Michigan (and here and here and here and here) and then we drove to Wisconsin (and here). We had saw lots of family and had lots of fun. Isabella did great too!

July

Continued projects on the house, trying to refine little things here and there, along with lots of summer fun like going to baseball games and playing in the park!

Also, on a sad note, my uncle died in July unexpectedly. It was really sad and hit home as it could have easily been one of my parents. Really makes you stop and hug everyone you love just a little bit tighter.

August

We sold our house. We bought a new house. We lost a baby.

September

In September I had the D&C procedure. Then it was time to move, move, move – literally! The whole experience of closing on the house and moving was a nightmare but we made it through. We moved on the last day of the month – on Isabella’s birthday!

October

October was spent unpacking, rearranging and getting settled. In the middle of that our house was hit with the flu bug and we were all down for the count in one way or another. I also made a quick trip to Fort Worth, TX for work.

November

Last month was a big month! I joined Kosama and worked my butt off (or tried). CJ and I celebrated our 5 year wedding anniversary. I turned 35. I had an amazing night with Jacob and Edward. AND we were able to see a Steelers game in person (and freeze our little feet off).

December

Shopping and decorating and baking – oh my! We saw some cool gingerbread houses, visited Santa Claus, fought with Isabella over brushing her teeth and had a lovely holiday season!

Phew! A very busy but good year. Here’s hoping 2012 brings more ups than downs and many blessings to all of us!

Hittin’ the Sauce

We are trying to be real with Isabella when it comes to body parts. We call everything by their proper name – even genitalia. One day she walked in on CJ changing his shirt and saw his nipples. She asked what they were and he told her, mentioning that she and mommy have nipples too.

Today when I was changing from work clothes to pajamas, and I took off my bra, she grabbed it and said, “I want to wear nipples.”

I explained to her that a bra was a torture device an item of clothing women wear to support their breasts and nipples. She didn’t get it.

Then she cried out, “Thomas wants to wear nipples too!” and promptly did this:

That’s Thomas wearing my new rainbow striped bra. She said she was decorating him with nipples like how we decorated the Christmas tree.

Mmm, k.

We left the room and went off to do other things. When I went back later to get something, and saw Thomas covered in a bra, my first thought was that he’d been sneaking some booze again. That or visiting the strip clubs. Guess we need to start teaching Isabella about a little thing called “rehab”.

Pony Up

It’s time to step up and look back at the resolutions I set at the beginning of the year, to see what I accomplished and how much progress I made.

I only had 3 resolutions last year but they were pretty lofty. Looking back, though I tried to define how I was going to achieve each one but I wasn’t nearly specific enough – and some weren’t even realistic.

Let’s take a look.

1. Project Tone and Tighten: Goal – lose 3 lbs. of holiday weight gain and then maintain while also toning up all over. Verdict: Fail.

To be honest, I don’t think this one was a very good goal. First of all, lose 3 lbs. Really? That’s like the difference from one day to the next just in retaining water! 3 lbs. is laughable! While saying you want to maintain your current weight is good in theory, there are no parameters around that. No one can be the exact same weight every single day. Our bodies are too dynamic. So something like “stay within the 135-140 pound range while continuing to exercise daily and eat a healthy diet” would have been better.

Also, I never took measurements or before/after pics in January so there was no way to measure the “tone all over” part, other than what I can see in the mirror, which is definitely deceiving. That being said, I did try various workout programs (like the 30 day Shred, P90X and Kosama) to add variety to my workouts. I ultimately weigh the same today that I did when I made this resolution so I didn’t lose the 3 lbs but I did tone up a bit.

2. Operation Dream Home Goal – sell our current house and buy our forever home. Verdict: Success!

We put a lot of time, money and effort in to getting our old house market ready and were able to sell it in 3 months, which is really good considering the market we were dealing with. There were some frustrations during that 3 months as I wanted things to move faster, but ultimately we got there.

We also found our dream home! At the time of making my resolution, I didn’t spell out any specifics of what that dream home should have but we later did when we were ready to shop. After searching for what seemed like months and looking at hundreds of houses, the very last one we looked at turned out to be “the one”. We’ve been living in it now for 3 months (OMG!) and couldn’t be happier with our home!

3. Mission Debt Diet – Goal – pay off all credit card debt and pay down loans while also creating a nest egg. Verdict: Fail.

This one was definitely not specific or actionable enough. It was also too lofty and not doable, particularly considering Operation Dream Home. I should have come up with specific dollar amounts to put aside each week/month for paying off the credit card and also determined a specific amount for savings. Instead I just threw whatever extra money we had at the credit card. Some months it was only $100 and others it was $600. However, one valuable lesson I learned was that you can’t be so focused on putting all your money toward one thing and forgetting another. I was so hell bent on getting the credit card balance paid off that I would put TOO much money toward it, leaving us with not enough to live on. So I would have to pull money from savings or start charging things, which just defeats the whole purpose. Slow and steady wins the race.

I paid off a good chunk of it for the first part of the year but then as we started working on the house, we added a bunch back on to it. Today, we’re sitting with a little less on the card then we had in January but still have a ways to go. I’m going to carry this goal over to next year only come up with a specific and achievable plan.

There you have it. Overall, I didn’t do all that great. However, I learned lessons that I can apply toward my goals for next year and hopefully be more successful! Stay tuned for my list of goals for 2012!

Accomplished

I love me a good to do list. This is for 2 reasons.

  1. It outlines my tasks and helps clear my head
  2. It feels so amazing to cross things off and see what you’re getting done

Yesterday was one of those days.

First of all, let me just say how nice it was to have the day AFTER Christmas off. That extra day really helped get things reset and back to normal before starting work again.

Boy did we take advantage! Originally we considered using the day to catch a movie or something but that would involve a baby-sitter (we feel Isabella is too young yet for movies, even the kids ones). Plus, that would take valuables hours away from the many tasks that have been piling up. Owning a house – and particularly having just moved – means no end to chores, fixes, repairs, remodels, etc. So we opted to stay home and get stuff done.

I didn’t actually write out a list, which is unusual for me, but I was checking one off in my head. Here’s everything I got done:

  • 2 loads of laundry folded and put away
  • First floor vacuumed
  • Dishes washed and put away (by hand and dishwasher)
  • Pictures hung in the master bedroom
  • 2 pictures hung in the living room
  • After Christmas shopping done at Lowe’s
  • Isabella’s kitchen set put together*
  • Christmas presents put away
  • Goodwill items donated*
  • Basement cleaned up and some organization started**

CJ got a whole bunch of other stuff done too, from his own list.

Boy did it feel good! I went to bed last night exhausted yet satisfied.

Switching gears a bit. I’m not going to write a whole Christmas re-cap post this year because frankly, I’m ready to move on. I love the holidays and we had an awesome weekend, but I’d rather leave it be and quietly go forth with my week. It’s one of those things that you build up for a whole month and then when it’s over, it’s time to just let it go and stop retelling it.

One thing I will share is that this year we got Isabella involved in culling through her toys. Before we even brought one gift from Grandma’s into the house or opened many of her Santa gifts, we had her sit with us in the play room and decide which toys she would keep, which ones would be put away for a while (i.e. take out of the rotation and bring back in 6 months from now when we needed something “new”) and which would be given away to “other kids and babies and ladies and guys” (as she says it).

I thought it would be hard for her to understand and that we’d have to grab toys out of her clutched little hands but it didn’t go that way at all. She was cool with giving some of them away. She even went with us to Goodwill yesterday and watched daddy take the bags of stuff in. She asked where daddy was taking her toys and I reminded her about other kids who needed them. She said, “And babies and ladies and guys.” Yes, them too.

With a herd of toys either gone or relegated to the basement, her playroom had much more room for her new toys, like the kitchen set. It looked so nice and neat and open last night I almost wept. I know it won’t last – especially with my tornado Father-in-law coming over today – but it sure looked good for a day!

Another project that was started today was the basement. That one wasn’t even on my to do list – it was a total accident. See, last week I started working out again. Some of my gear is still packed away, and we don’t have the TV set up in the basement yet, so I’ve been forced to do either the elliptical while reading a magazine or free weight moves (using fitness cards from magazines). Well I finished my magazine this morning before my time was up on the elliptical and I CANNOT use a machine without either reading material or TV to watch. So I had to find other cardio. I looked around the basement – which has basically been the dumping grounds for everything else in the house that we don’t know what to do with – and decided I might as well work on organizing it.

So I moved furniture (including the elliptical which before was tucked back in a dark corner and now is near another wall, under some light), went through boxes, picked up toys, and basically started figuring out where things should go and how to keep it somewhat tidy while still being in limbo.

I got so much done and was moving and using muscles the whole time. Not too exciting but I felt great about it! Plan to do that again tomorrow and every day thereafter until we have a gym membership (which could be sooner rather than later)!

I have a whole slew of other projects to get done but those will have to wait for another day and another post.
